Weightlifting refers to any activity that requires lifting heavy objects either as a sport or exercise. As an exercise, there are numerous health benefits of weightlifting.

We are very familiar with the benefits of exercise and how it helps keep the body in shape. When you think of exercise, your mind immediately goes to running, jogging, cycling. Rarely do people consider weightlifting as an exercise. This is because many do not know the health benefits of weightlifting.

At the mention of weightlifting, huge bulky men with tight abs and huge muscles. In fact, I am currently picturing Dwanye Johnson( The Rock) and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

However, Weightlifting is not just for those looking to build body fibre. If you’re looking to exercise and maintain a healthy body, you should consider adding weightlifting to your to-do list.

Here Are 7 Reasons Why Weightlifting is Beneficial to Your Health

1. Weightlifting Strengthens Bones And Joints

Our body is largely made up of bones. As we grow older, we tend to lose bone density gradually. Weightlifting helps strengthen your bones and joints and prevents osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bones become weak and can easily break.  When a bone is lost, the body finds it difficult in replacing such bone. In Nigeria alone, there are more than 1.5 million cases per year.

Weightlifting requires you to stress your bones. Stressing your bones can increase bone density, build stronger bones, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

2. It Builds Muscles For Strength

Have you ever been punched by a weightlifter? There are limits to the bravery of a man and my stops at the sight of a bodybuilder.

As obvious as it looks, muscle strength is one of the health benefits of weightlifting. We need strength for carrying out our day-to-day activities. Every day, we exert strength to move heavy things.

Weightlifting strengthens your muscles by tightening your muscles against a resisting force. This tightening helps tone your muscles by building your strength and endurance.

3. Weighltifting Helps Burns Body Fat

Lifting weights is a healthy way to burn body fat and manage your weight.

Weightlifting increases your body metabolism, the rate at which your body burns calories at rest. It is effective in building muscles and muscles burn calories at rest. You can change your metabolism through weightlifting because you burn more calories if you have more muscles.

When you engage in lifting weights, your body requires more energy based on how tough you’re working out. Considering that weightlifting builds muscles and muscles burns calories at rest, when you lift weights, you burn calories during the workout and more calories after the workout, while your body is resting.

4. Improving the Condition Of Your Heart is One of the Health Benefits of Weightlifting

When added with aerobic exercises such as jogging and jumping, weightlifting helps improve blood pressure and flow and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

While you lift weights, your heartbeat rate increases. You require energy and strength and this exerts pressure on your heart. This strengthens the health condition of your heart.

Lifting weights for less than an hour a week may reduce your risk for a heart attack by 40 to 70 per cent.

Engaging in weightlifting does not require as much intention as you imagine it to be. Lifting weights at least twice weekly can lower the risk of high blood pressure and heart attack.

5. Weightlifting Helps Improves Body Posture And Balance

Simply put, weightlifting is the best way to get your body shaped and fit – and this goes for both gender.

Weightlifting challenges the muscles. These muscles shape the body and getting these muscles into the right shapes requires you to engage in lifting weights.

During my teenage years, i and a friend took the challenge to look fit. Three months into my workout routine, I quit because I was very inconsistent. My friend, however, continued. Three years down the line, he has a body I can only covet.

Lifting weights improves your body physique by toning your body into shape. It also strengthens your balance because you build stronger muscles which also reduces your risk of injury

6. One of the Benefits of Weightlifting Help Boosts Your Confidence

One psychological way of boosting your confidence and self-esteem is by putting in the work to lift weights. Improved confidence can come from how you look and how you are viewed.

When you lift weights, you build a physically strong body which can boost your confidence and what you can do.

When I was little, I had an uncle who was a gym freak. He looked quite daunting and I always loved going out with him. I would say to my friends “if you hit me, I’d call my uncle and you won’t like it”. I had so much confidence in him just because of how he looked.

Lifting weights helps you to stay fit, builds your strength and your physique. Strength enables you to go beyond your usual human limits and builds confidence in what you can achieve.

7. Weightlifting Improves Your Mentality

Lifting weights doesn’t only strengthen you physically but mentally too.

When you lift weights, you challenge yourself to overcome discomfort and build endurance. It teaches you to go beyond your limits, to do more, and to endure. You cultivate an attitude of perseverance within you.

As you workout consider, you build the ability to endure pain for the greater good. You also learn to be comfortable with discomfort and most importantly, you learn to be persistent through uncomfortable situations. You build a champion’s spirit.

Conclusion

It is important to note that Weightlifting is not just for bodybuilders looking to bulk up.

As an individual looking to stay fit and healthy, you should consider including Weightlifting to your list of exercise routines. Regular weightlifting is good, irrespective of your age or gender as it prevents loss of bone density that comes with ageing, improves your body posture, and helps you stay in great shape.

Now that you know the health benefits of weightlifting, why don’t you get the ball rolling and plan your exercise routine accordingly? All you need is the motivation to work out daily.

Remember, health is wealth.
