How NASA Space Station in Kano Helped Put the First Man on The Moon

How NASA Space Station in Kano Helped Put the First Man on The Moon

Did you know that a NASA space station in Kano state in Nigeria was crucial to the success of the Apollo mission, the first mission which landed a human on the moon? Let me tell you how it happened.

How NASA Space Station in Kano Helped the Apollo Mission

In 1958 at the dawn of the Space Race, the USA launched its first human spaceflight program, Project Mercury. The program’s purpose was to launch a man into orbit and safely return him to Earth before the Soviet Union.

Project Mercury’s accomplishments paved the way for Project Gemini and then Project Apollo, which landed a man on the moon.

Project Mercury and Project Gemini were instrumental in getting a man on the moon. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) established various stations worldwide to control and coordinate all activities for Project Mercury and later Project Gemini. In Kano, Nigeria, one of these stations was constructed. As it was known, NASA’s Tracking Station 5 was essential in laying the foundation for putting a man on the moon.

Project Mercury

The United States launched Project Mercury in 1958 and completed it in 1963. It was the first man-in-space program in the United States. The program’s goals, which included six manned flights from 1961 to 1963, were clear: orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth.

Project Mercury existed before the internet. The space race necessitated the development of the world’s first global communication network, which would allow space stations, spacecraft, and astronauts to communicate with one another.

According to NASA historical archives, the Mercury communications network included 102,000 miles of teletype lines, 60,000 miles of telephone, and 15,000 miles of high-speed data lines. This resulted in the establishment of the world’s first global communications network.

This network was primarily made up of NASA ground stations, such as the one in Kano. NASA outfitted the stations with “telemetry, tracking, and computation functions,” as well as “flight control and monitoring” and “multi-frequency air-to-ground reception and remoting provision.” Using an intercom system, several people could converse while others listened.

The outcomes of this extensive communication between Earth and space and between stations such as the NASA station in Kano eventually led to the moon landing. This global network continued to serve subsequent space programs until it was replaced in the 1980s by the satellite relay system.

Project Apollo and Kano

Launching a spacecraft into low-Earth orbit required ground controls and tracking stations in countries along Earth’s orbital path. NASA built 18 stations in strategic locations worldwide, including Kano, Nigeria.

The Kano station, among others, played an important role in tracking and controlling such spacecraft during Project Mercury, which launched such spacecraft into low earth orbit. This is because the spacecraft is only visible from a small portion of the Earth’s surface at a time, and the satellites move quickly overhead.

These stations were responsible for flight control and communication functions such as telemetry reception and documentation, tracking, commanding, and voice communications with the spacecraft.

Throughout the project, the United States processed over 1,000 tons of cargo through specially designated US depots that coordinated shipments to Nigeria and other stations worldwide. These were mostly communication and electronic equipment, as well as tracking devices.

Who Worked in the NASA Kano Space Station?

According to NASA historical records, NASA contracted with US and British engineers as well as local specialists and builders in Kano to survey the land to establish the most precise angles for radar antennae used to communicate with spacecraft as they passed above and below the horizon line. Electronic equipment, cooling towers, water chillers, hydropneumatic tanks, and diesel generators for backup power were all housed in stations.

Following the success of Project Mercury, Project Gemini was launched to develop deep space travel techniques to support the Apollo mission to land astronauts on the moon. Project Gemini used the same ground stations, including NASA Tracking Station 5 in Kano. This demonstrates how important the Kano station was in putting a man on the moon.

Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon’s surface on July 21, 1969. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” he described the event. It was a huge step forward for humanity, and it was the first of five missions that landed astronauts on the moon as part of Project Apollo. The successes of Project Mercury and Project Gemini, which enabled NASA to develop advanced spaceflight techniques, made it possible for Project Apollo to succeed.

It also would not have been possible without the incredible work of NASA’s ground stations worldwide, such as NASA Tracking Station 5 in Kano, Nigeria.

Conclusion

The Kano station was decommissioned in December 1966, following the completion of Project Gemini. The NASA space station in Kano was instrumental in Projects Mercury, Gemini, and, eventually, Apollo, which put a man on the moon.

The NASA Kano station aided in providing critical communication and tracking functions, which resulted in significant advancements in spaceflight techniques and technology. Nigeria would later launch its space program in 2003, with plans to send an astronaut into space by 2030.

Alaqa Review

Alaqa is a well-produced series. It incorporates modern cinematography and the quality is great. The production team did a good job with the production design. Cosmetics, locations, and props fit well into the narrative.

The soundtrack and theme songs fit well with the visuals and the sound editing is of good quality.

The series suffers from a pacing issue though. So many scenes are unnecessary and mostly made of filler content that does nothing to progress the plot. A lot of the scenes could be cut out from the final product and still won’t affect the story in any way. Some scenes are over-dramatized and do nothing but waste time with slow-motion effects.

Poor editing is another weakness of the series. Most scenes do not reach a natural stopping point before they are cut off. There is a lot of jumping to and fro between multiple scenes in the same act. This is evident right from the first episode.

Conclusion

Alaqa is an ongoing web series on Youtube created and directed by Ali Nuhu that tells the story of the wealthy Alfindiki family and the crises they go through. It also focuses on the rivalry between Audu Luluwa and the Alfindiki family as he seeks to bring them down.

Complete Review of Windows 11

Complete Review of Windows 11

Windows 11 is the latest Windows operating system released by Microsoft in October 2021. It was released as a free upgrade to Windows 10 devices that meet the strict minimum Windows 11 system requirements. Windows 11, the successor to the widely used and praised Windows 10 is a breath of fresh air, but it is not without flaws and faults. If you’re considering upgrading to the latest version of the world’s most popular operating system, this review of Windows 11 is a must-read, as I’ll be looking at the best and worst features of the new operating system.

Price and Availability

Windows 11 is free for anyone to download if their computer meets the minimum system requirements.

It is simple to download and install. Microsoft officially provided three options for downloading and installing Windows 11 on computers. Computers running Windows 10 that meet the system requirements are notified automatically through the Windows Update section of Settings when the upgrade is ready, where they can easily download and install it.

Windows 11 is also available on brand new laptops that meet the operating system’s system requirements and were produced after it was released.

A Microsoft account and an internet connection will be required for anybody to use Windows 11. You’ll be stuck at the setup page if you don’t have these. This provides a variety of advantages, including single-sign-on for Office, OneDrive backup, syncing settings across many devices, full-disk encryption for the system drive, and the option to reinstall Windows without a serial number. While this is understandable from one perspective, it may frustrate those who simply want to use a computer on occasion without having to create an account or have regular internet access.

The requirement for the TPM 2.0 hardware security chip, which is not found in most computers, reduces availability. This is because, even if their computer meets the rest of the requirements, not everyone can upgrade to the latest operating system. Even the most modern computers lack the hardware chip, so updating to Windows 11 may require purchasing a new computer.

More than Just a Fresh Coat of Paint

Windows 11’s new visual design and user interface are a breath of fresh air. When upgrading from Windows 10, this is the most significant and apparent change.

A redesigned user interface can be found across the operating system, thanks to Microsoft’s new Fluent Design language. Fluent Design is Microsoft’s successor to Metro Design, which was introduced with Windows 8. Everything appears to be more modern and refined, giving the interface a new level of slickness and uniformity. The UI features a lot of transparency, shadows, a new color palette, and rounded geometry.

Windows 11 is packed with a variety of theme options. You can choose from a set of default themes or design the best visual aesthetic for yourself. It comes with eight pre-installed themes and you can even download more on the Microsoft Store. When customizing a Windows theme, you can select your background images, colors, fonts, sounds, mouse cursors, contrasts, and more.

The built-in Windows programs File Explorer, Paint, Snipping Tool, and others have all been refreshed and updated. Unlike previous versions, File Explorer now has a streamlined ribbon along the top, resulting in a less crowded and congested menu bar. The context menus for right-clicking are likewise shorter, cleaner, and smarter, displaying only the most frequently used options.

Even though Windows 11 sports a fresh design, when you go deeper, there are still some similarities with the previous Windows 10 design. For example, if you right-click in a folder and bring up the ‘Properties’ menu, you’ll find the same settings as before, but with rounded buttons and a new icon. Although the new Windows 11 may appear to be a reskin of the old Windows10, the new Fluent Design language is a pleasant improvement.

Taskbar and Start Menu

The new centralized taskbar, which is permanently pinned to the bottom of the screen, is a noticeable difference in the UI. It takes a little getting used to, but if you don’t like it, you can quickly go back to the familiar left side of the screen in Settings.

If you’re using Windows 11 on a tablet device, the centered alignment makes sense from a usability standpoint, but with a mouse, it doesn’t, and you’ll probably want to change it back to the left. The buttons are smaller and less informative. They don’t show you which programs are running and which are just pinned as plainly as Windows 10. You can’t make them wider, and they don’t show download or processing progress as Windows 10 apps can. Finally, the Windows 11 taskbar lacks drag-and-drop functionality, though Microsoft is said to be working on improving this in future versions.

The Start menu has also been redesigned. Like the taskbar, everything is centered and its design also abides by the Fluent Design language. Pinned app buttons are at the top of the panel while recent and frequent apps and documents are in a section below them.

Visually the Start menu looks great, but digging deeper reveals the flaws. For example, when you try to search for something, it launches the Search app, which is a bit jarring when it switches between this and the Start menu. It lacks the uniformity of the Windows 10 Start menu, which allows you to search for something and get quick results. It feels half-baked and slower than before. The Start menu in Windows 10 provides quick access to power, settings, and folders. It also prioritizes the most frequently used and newly installed programs. That’s all lost in Windows 11, which instead offers Suggested and Pinned app and document icons.

The Start menu has potential, but it has to be improved. The current design appears unfinished and is more suited to tablets than laptops and desktop computers and has drawn much criticism from users and a number of publications of review of Windows 11.

Security

The requirements for Windows 11 sparked a lot of debate, mostly since the operating system required TPM2.0, which made upgrading to Windows 11 nearly impossible without it.

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a hardware chip whose function is to protect data used to authenticate the computer you are using. The TPM can also be used to keep the platform secure, enable disk encryption, store passwords and certificates, and so on. TPM chips are useful in terms of overall system security, which Microsoft believes it needs to enforce with Windows 11. This tries to increase system security in general, particularly against hackers. This alone elevates Windows 11’s security to the top of the security list. This should be a key take-away from this review of Windows 11.

Windows Defender, the built-in antivirus program in Windows 11, is still a formidable force. It defends against almost every sort of malware. It also oversees lots of additional security features, including firewall and network protection, app and browser control, device security, and even parental controls. Although Windows Defender is more than capable of defending computers without the need for third-party antivirus software, it suspends itself when you install a third-party solution to avoid conflict.

User Experience and Accessibility

Windows 11 is fast and responsive. The transition from one folder to the next, and from one window to the next, is much faster than in Windows 10. In Windows 11, multitasking has been substantially improved. New features like Snap Groups, which allow you to return to previously snapped windows from the dock, allowing you to get to your email app, Edge browser windows, or anything else without having to snap them back to the previous view, are improving the way users operate with numerous programs.

When you hover over the maximize button, a new feature called Snap Layouts appears, which brings up a choice with multiple grids. Snap Assist will walk you through the process of arranging windows in the remaining zones once you’ve chosen a layout and position. Snap Assist only allowed about three distinct window layouts in the past, but with Snap layouts, you may now have up to six different window layouts. However, the number will be determined by the screen size.

In terms of poor user experience, the taskbar and Start menu stand out the most. They both have difficulties that make navigating the interface and accessing files, apps, and folders difficult. It will take some time for you to adjust. As you try to search for something, for example, it starts the Search app, which is startling when it jumps back and forth between this and the Start menu. It lacks the uniformity of the Windows 10 Start menu, which allows you to search for something and get quick results. Hopefully, as time passes and Microsoft releases patches, many of the terrible user experience issues will be resolved.

Windows 11 also includes a new feature that simplifies the use of external displays. When you disconnect the external display, for example, all of the applications on the secondary screen will instantly reduce. When you reconnect the monitor, the apps will return to their original location automatically. If you detach a laptop from an external monitor, for example, Windows will remember where some apps were installed.

You’ll be offered the opportunity to move files and your desktop from OneDrive, Microsoft’s online storage service when you first start up a PC with a fresh install of Windows 11. It’s a very useful tool that will benefit a lot of people, especially when it comes to setting up a new PC for the first time.

Accessibility is emphasized more in Windows 11. Audio alerts for visually impaired users now include notifications for when a message box opens, when an update is available, and much more. Voice Typing can also assist users in converting voice to text. Magnification programs, speech commander apps, and screen readers all get enhanced support.

Gaming

PC gamers will be pleased to learn that Windows 11 includes updates and enhancements to gaming capabilities and software. The Xbox Game Pass subscription service is available through a built-in Xbox app in Windows 11. This implies that PC gamers can play Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, Battlefield, and other Xbox games that are available through the service. Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft’s streaming game platform, is also featured.

All new features that boost PC gaming include greater Virtual Reality and HDR support for games, DirectStorage for faster game loading times, and Auto HDR for making non-HDR games look better in terms of contrast. These features put PC gaming on par with Xbox gaming, although PC gaming is still dependent on hardware types.

Conclusion

From this review of Windows 11, it is conclusive that the latest operating system is a breath of new air. With the new Fluent Design language, Microsoft has nailed the visual design, proving to be a worthy replacement for the old Metro Design. It’s a pleasant upgrade that pulls Windows’ appearance and color into the present day.

In many respects, Windows 11 is closer to competitors like MacOS, Android, and Chrome than it has ever been, which I think is a positive thing. Windows 11 delivers a fresh new design, handy new features, updated default programs, expanded capabilities, and improved performance.

There is, however, more work to be done. Because you’re looking at the same functions as before, but with softer corners and a new icon, it can frequently feel like the redesign is nothing more than a reskin of Windows 10. The taskbar and Start menu, for example, might require additional refinement and upgrades because they currently lack the features and capabilities of their Windows 10 counterparts. Microsoft needs to go deeper and attempt to improve and refine several features and applications to bring them up to modern standards.

It is still early days for this new version of the operating system that’s used on 1.3 billion PCs, so we look forward to Microsoft fine-tuning and perfecting Windows 11’s design in future updates.

Why Elon Musk Bought Twitter and What it Means for You

Why Elon Musk Bought Twitter and What it Means for You

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in 2006. It is one of the best platforms to become a social media influencer. After raising money from investors and venture capitalists for years, Twitter was made public in 2013 with 70 million shares up for sale. On April 25, 2022, renowned billionaire Elon Musk completed a deal worth around $44 Billion to purchase Twitter wholly and turn it into a private company.

So, why did Elon Musk buy Twitter, and what could it mean for you?

Why did Elon Musk Buy Twitter?

Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company. Twitter has extraordinary potential. I will unlock it.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk believes Twitter has enormous potential, which will not be realized if the company remains publicly traded. He believes that the company must be privatized to implement the radical changes required to realize the company’s enormous potential.

His belief in free speech is the primary motivator behind his acquisition of the social media giant. Mr. Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” stated on April 14 during an interview with TED that Twitter is the “de facto town square” and that “it’s very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech.”

“I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy,” Musk wrote in a letter sent to Twitter Chairman Bret Taylor.

Elon Musk is a frequent Twitter user, with over 88 million followers as of April 2022.

He has consistently criticized the platform’s strict free speech restrictions and is not a stranger to Twitter’s strict content moderation. In fact, in 2018, US financial regulators accused him of misleading Tesla investors with his tweets, claims that were settled for $40 million and that Mr. Musk continues to deny.

In 2019, he was hit with a defamation suit, which he won, after calling a diver involved in the rescue of schoolboys in Thailand a “pedo guy” on the platform. Mr. Musk, who has a history of clashing with journalists and blocking critics, suggested that he saw Twitter as a place for debate.

How Elon Musk Acquired Twitter

I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter because that is what free speech means,

Mr. Musk reiterated his push to soften Twitter’s stance on content moderation in the news release announcing the deal. “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to humanity’s future are debated,” Elon Musk has stated that money and profits are not driving this deal.

“This isn’t a way to make money… it’s just that I think having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization,” Musk said at TED2022. “But yeah, I don’t care about the economics at all.”

Elon Musk and Twitter’s relationship began when he announced that he had purchased a 9% stake in the company on April 4, 2022. Following the announcement, Twitter extended an invitation to Musk to join its board of directors, which he accepted. The position would have barred Musk from owning more than 14.9 percent of the company. Musk resigned from the board four days later, before his appointment was to take effect, after publishing several tweets critical of the company.

Musk then made an unsolicited and non-binding offer to buy the company for $44 billion, or $54.20 per share, and take it private on April 14. The bid was described as a hostile takeover attempt. The company responded that it would “carefully review the proposal to determine the course of action that it believes is in the company’s best interests and all Twitter stockholders.”

After days of negotiations, Twitter’s board publicly and unanimously accepted the $44 billion buyout offer on April 25. Twitter will become a private company once the transaction is completed sometime in 2022.

What are Elon Musk’s Plans for Twitter?

Taking the company private would enable Musk to make the changes he desires much more quickly, without having to answer to public markets.

Elon Musk’s primary strategy is to reduce Twitter’s content moderation and turn it into a “platform for free speech.” Twitter has constantly strictly policed its platform. Any tweet or content that violates its policies and guidelines will be quickly banned or suspended.

In fact, on January 8, 2021, Twitter suspended then-President Donald Trump’s account for violating Twitter’s anti-violence guidelines. Musk intends to relax these rules now that he has complete control of the company, allowing for “free speech.”

Journalists, politicians, and analysts all slammed the move. Many people believe that a free Twitter will foster hate speech, bigotry, misinformation, and cyberbullying. Musk has stated that Twitter should “match the country’s laws,” implying that he may continue practices such as region-locking certain content and adhering to rules such as India’s social media regulations.

Elon Musk has also stated that he intends to open-source Twitter’s recommendation algorithm, determining how tweets appear on users’ timelines. This entails publishing the algorithm on Github, where programmers worldwide can help improve the system. As a result, users will see more relevant content on their timelines. Musk has yet to outline specific plans for releasing the algorithm.

Elon Musk intends to rid the platform of the spambots and scam cryptocurrency impersonators that have plagued it. Musk himself was a victim of a cryptocurrency scam on Twitter, when his account, along with Barack Obama’s, Bill Gates’, and several other celebrities and billionaires, was hacked, resulting in thousands of dollars in losses. In addition, he intends to authenticate all humans on the platform.

What Could That Mean to You?

Elon Musk’s Twitter plans’ “free speech” component has received the most criticism. Because this could lead to an increase in bigotry, racism, misogyny, misinformation, etc. There is no denying that this has already occurred on the platform despite its strict guidelines, but with Musk’s planned relaxation of content moderation, this terrible content could skyrocket.

Following the announcement of the agreement, human rights groups expressed concern that a lack of restraint could lead to an increase in hate speech.

“The last thing we need is a Twitter that willfully ignores violent and abusive speech directed at users,” Amnesty International tweeted.

Many people have left Twitter because of Elon Musk’s plans to make it a “platform for free speech.”

The plan to open source Twitter’s algorithm can only improve the experience of browsing Twitter timelines. Because it means that users will only receive recommendations, advertisements, and tweets tailored to their patterns and preferences. This would go a long way toward ensuring that posts that aren’t tailored to your choices don’t appear on your timeline.

Twitter’s strict policing of hate speech has resulted in many users being wrongfully banned and suspended for innocent tweets that had no malicious intent. This is most likely due to Twitter’s AI and algorithm misinterpreting some tweets as harmful. That is one of the flaws Musk intends to address by making the algorithm open source, allowing it to be improved as much as possible.

There are numerous advantages to authenticating humans. It will go a long way toward reducing spam bots and fake accounts. Catfishing, which has plagued many people on social media and has led to scams and identity theft, will also be eliminated. Although the details of how this will be implemented are not yet known, authentication can range from a simple captcha “I am not a robot” verification to complete identity verification.

Musk has also stated that the platform will gradually transition away from the ad revenue model. This means no more obnoxious pop-up ads obstructing your scrolling and content consumption.

He also stated that he intends to allow longer posts and to add an ‘edit’ feature. He recently posted a poll on the platform, asking users to vote on whether they wanted the feature or not.

Conclusion

Elon Musk has purchased and taken complete control of Twitter. He intends to make the social media platform “an inclusive arena for free expression.” The acquisition has elicited polarized reactions. While many see it as an opportunity for Twitter to explore and realize its full potential finally, others see it as the eccentric billionaire’s attempt to turn one of the most popular online platforms into a personal toy and breeding ground for hate speech and abuse. Indeed, many users have stated that they will be leaving the platform following the deal’s announcement.

The transaction will take until the end of the year to complete, implying that we will have to wait a while before we see Musk’s plans materialize.

What do you think about the acquisition? Are you staying or leaving Twitter? Please let us know in the comments section.
