Kano State is a state located in northern Nigeria. Kano borders Katsina State to the northwest, Jigawa State to the northeast, Bauchi State to the southeast and Kaduna State to the southwest. The state’s capital is the city of Kano. The state was created on May 27, 1967. In 1991, part of Kano State was separated to form Jigawa State. Kano state local governments are mainly populated by the Hausas.
Kano remains one of the most respected states in the region and one of the most respected states in the region and the country at large. Kano city was one of the most important historical cities in the region, even before the invasion by the British. Even then, it was an important centre of commerce—a title it still holds— where traders from all over the world came to trade their wares. Kurmi market was one of the largest markets in West Africa then. Baring Lagos, Kano is perhaps the next major market in Nigeria.
With a projected population of over 13 million (13,076,892) according to NBS Projections in 2017, Kano State is the most populous state in Nigeria.
