Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited blood disorder caused by a genetic mutation. There’s no remedy for most individuals with sickle cell anemia. But medications can bring relief and prevent complications related to the malady.

Signs more often than not show up around 5 months of age. They differ in individual and over time can change. Signs and symptoms could include: Anemia, episodes of pain, swelling of hands and feet among others.

Here are tips we found useful to live the life of your dreams surviving with sickle cell anemia. And you can live a full, active life as much as you desire. Making smart choices is important in keeping the condition from turning into a crisis. 

Incorporate These Into Your Daily Routine

Knowing how to live with sickle cell anemia is important since the disease is a complex disease. You have to see your doctor for checkups. He will help you to narrow down the list of problems, help you with medication, therapy and tell you things you should do and shouldn’t do.

To survive with sickle cell anemia, you have to do things that will improve your system and fight disease. These include:

Drink Enough Water

Drinking enough water that will make you remain hydrated will lessen the crisis. Drinking water is very important and you should always drink water based on your body mass.

But, as a sickle cell patient, you need more water than others. 

Get Enough Sleep

Sleeping is very important to health. It is the time our body regain its lost cells, regulate the body’s immunity. It is also the time we regain our strength after our daily hassle.

So try and get enough sleep.

Always Eat a Balanced diet

Eating a balanced diet is the way to get the best out of your body and remain productive. Eating the right amount of nutrients daily help us gain strength and improve our immunity. Grow our cells and improve our well-being in all aspects of life.

Make sure you eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins. 

Exercise to Keep Fit

Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! I cannot stress this enough! It is the key to healthy living. Exercising is good for the body. It will give you strength, confidence, and keep you in shape. You should not overdo it. Before you begin to exercise talk with your doctor and know which exercise is right for your health condition so that you won’t stress yourself. There are a lot of easy exercises you can do at home.

Stress is bad for your condition. Rest when tired.

Don’t Joke with Your Medications!

Be punctual in taking your drugs. Make sure to take the drugs prescribed by your doctor. Also, make sure to get a laboratory test as recommended by your doctor.

Try and get your vaccines as recommended to avoid diseases that are dangerous to sickle cell disease.

Pain in persons with sickle cell disease differs as it can be mild or chronic depending on the individual. The process of relieving such pain differs too. To survive with sickle cell anemia try to lessen the pains using the following tips:

Talk with Your Doctor

Explain to your doctor about your symptoms he will find the best treatment to relieve you from the pain. He might examine you and place you on medicines and other relief methods such as heating pads or physical therapy. The method will depend on how severe your pain is. Don’t try over the content drugs unless if your doctor recommends it.

Drugs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen Sodium may affect your kidney.

Find out What Causes the Pain

Whenever you are experiencing pain try to figure out what triggered it. Write down a list of things you do or feel that causes pain in your body. Once you know what the cause is, you can avoid it and survive with sickle cell anemia. Or if it is a necessity you can do it with caution.

Find out what is right for you. People are different and so is what works for you. Try different things that will help in elevating your pain once you know what triggers it. Also, try to relax and avoid stressing yourself.

Avoid These Things like A Plague!

Make sure you are not exposed to extreme cold or heat because it can trigger a crisis. During a change in weather try covering up or if it is unavoidable, don’t stay alone at home.

Alcohol is dangerous for you because it dehydrates you causing crisis apart from the many side effects of taking alcohol.

Smoking is very dangerous as it causes acute chest syndrome. A condition that occurs when sickle cells come together blocking oxygen from going into your lungs.

Infection is common in sickle cell patients who always try to practice personal hygiene. Stay in a clean environment and wash your fruits and vegetables before eating. Be neat.

Stress triggers crisis, so try and relax, avoid all that stresses you. Try to calm down if you want to survive with sickle cell anemia.

Learn to live with warriors as well as know when they are about to have a crisis, as this will help with dealing with it or even prevent it from happening.

Help Them When They Are in Pain

This can be ither by messaging or giving them a heating pad or taking them to the doctor in cases of emergency. 

See A Doctor When You Notice This

Certain conditions are unavoidable no matter how careful you are. Don’t frit! When you find that you are experiencing these symptoms please seek medical help immediately: 

Pain that refuses to go after all remedies such as chest pain, pain in bones, stomach or joints.

Sided paralysis, sudden vision loss or numbness that you can not explain.

Swellings in hands or feet, a belly that is tender to touch.

High fever can lead to serious infections. This is because fever is the first sign of infection in sickle cell disease.

Difficulty in breathing.

Conclusion

Knowing how to live with sickle cell anemia is essential. The key to that is keeping up with regular checkups with your doctor and making sure to track your blood levels. Try and take your medication, while living and eating healthy. Try to exercise as well if you want to achieve your dreams in life.
