8 Amazing Ways That will Help You Become the Perfect Mentor

8 Amazing Ways That will Help You Become the Perfect Mentor

When the word “mentoring” is mentioned, what usually comes to our mind is the picture of people in suits giving speaking to a gathering of people, and giving advice. What if I told you, that everyone is and can be a mentor to someone? In this article, I’d be showing you how to be a mentor to someone using 7 working strategies, some of which you might have been exhibiting without knowing.

Mentoring involves helping someone consciously grow and develop. Most times, it forms into a relationship between the mentor and the mentee (that is, the person being mentored).

Some mentorship relationships may last for a long time, others for a very short while. I have had conversations with experts in the writing field that lasted less than an hour but have had a tremendous impact on my career.

How to be a mentor to someone is not a daunting task. It involves some of the skills you probably already have like listening and curiosity. If you have younger siblings, it’d not be surprising if you know just how much influence you have on them.

What are the 7 strategies for being the perfect mentor?

7 Ways on How to be a Mentor to Someone

1. Ask Your Mentee Questions

One of the key tips on how to be a mentor to someone is being able to question your mentee on various aspects of their life, goals, and aspirations.

First, you need to know your mentee. You need to know who they are, their background, their likes, and dislikes among other things. This helps you start the training process on a relationship basis.

Secondly, you need to know their goals and aspirations. What do they aim to get from you? What aspects of their life or career do they want to see progress? These questions help you understand what challenges your mentee is facing and how you can help.

When I first contacted my “short-term” mentor, he asked me straight up “Alex what do you want to learn from me. Write it down and I’d give you a call in the next one hour” and that was it. Asking that question helped me gain clarity on what I actually wanted to gain.

2. Be an Active Listener

Active and attentive listening is a skill everyone needs to practice, especially those who are or want to be mentors.

As a mentor, you should give your mentee the freedom to speak. Think of it as a conversation between siblings.

You might have a vast knowledge of what you want to teach your mentee but paying attention to what they have to say can give you insight into how to teach. While you might have ready answers to guide your mentee, allowing them to speak can give an insight into how they think.

Learn to listen. Listening helps you understand their point of view. It can give you clarity on what your mentee really wants and how to help them through.

3. Create a Step-by-Step Plan to Help Them Grow

I’m fighting the urge to write “failing to plan is planning to fail”. Then I’d drop the mic and you guys would clap for me. On a serious note though, creating a plan is important when mentoring someone, especially if the mentorship is a long-term one.

You can create a plan that helps you work around the goals you’ve both set out from the beginning. Setting mutual goals gives you a blueprint on what you both want to achieve from the relationship. For example, if your mentee’s goal is to learn how to be a better public speaker, you can use that as a yardstick when creating a plan to help them out.

A plan also contains the schedule of your meeting. How would your contact meetings be? Offline or online? Google Meet or at a cafeteria?

4. Deliberate on Ideas Together

Do you notice how I keep saying “relationship” rather than “mentorship”? That’s because, as a mentor building a relationship with your mentee helps them connect with you better.

When a connection is established, you can then begin to deliberate and ponder on ideas together. Yes, I know you have exactly what your mentee needs but have you ever thought that they might actually have an idea on what to do but don’t know how to do it?

When I started writing, I had no idea how to monetize my skill. I met up with some of my friends, turned mentors who had experience in building careers. Rather than tell me how to monetize my skill, they asked me a few questions.

  • Why do you like writing?
  • What do you need to be a good writer?
  • What platforms do you know hire the type of writer you are?
  • If you were a client, would you hire yourself?

I had answers to some of these questions immediately, and some I did not. Instead of showing me platforms that hired writers, they made me research and bring to them platforms that best fit my style. In the end, I made the choice myself, with their guide.

When you brainstorm ideas together with your mentee, rather than provide all the answers yourself, you are helping them develop as thinkers.

5. Introduce Them to Your Network

Sometimes, someone might want you to be their mentor because they noticed how much access you have to people and they want that. Honestly speaking, I’ve had conversations with people I ordinarily wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for my mentors.

As a mentor, if you have several connections that would help your mentee develop better, feel free to network your mentee with them.

However, do not feel pressured to do these. If you feel your mentee isn’t developed enough to be granted access to your network, don’t make that introduction.

6. Give Words of Encouragement

Guiding someone through a developing phase can be hard. And I mean, very hard. Some days clicking with your mentee would be difficult. As with every relationship, good days and bad days happen.

This is where you come in as a good mentor. Rather than dish out criticism at the slightest opportunity, substitute it with words of encouragement.

I remember days when I felt like I wasn’t doing things right and I would run back to my mentor and complain over the same thing we’ve gone over a thousand times and all he’d say is “be patient, Alex. Work on your patience”. And that was it.

7. Avoid Being Bias and Judgmental

One key tip on how to be a mentor to someone is to keep every form of bias or prejudice you have aside when mentoring someone.

As a mentor, you need to keep an open mind when meeting your mentee. Avoid projecting any form of prejudice or stereotype towards them because it can affect the mentorship process.

Be a safe space for your mentee. Let them know you are there for there. Listen to their frustrations and vents. Avoid judging. You never know what things they might be going through.

These 7 tips on how to be a mentor to someone are practicable. Sometimes, people can choose you to be their mentor because they see what you have been doing and feel you can help them through too.

Being a mentor can be a fun experience. As you’re helping someone grow and develop, you’re also developing yourself as an individual.

Have you ever had a mentor or are you a mentor yourself? What experience would you like others to know? Share your thoughts in the comment section. I’d be looking out for tips to share.

7 Tested Ways That will Teach How to Handle Criticisms Better

7 Tested Ways That will Teach How to Handle Criticisms Better

Knowing how to handle criticisms better is a valuable skill necessary for thriving in the workplace and society at large. We are humans and imperfections are a part of our DNA. We do not have the chance to always be perfect at what we do, hence, those who can see our flaws have the right to criticize and call us to check.

However, if you do not know how to handle criticisms better, you would have issues relating to people around you. Particularly because it is easier for others to see our flaws and give correction and people find it difficult to take or even learn from correction.

Types of Criticisms

Criticisms are opinions, judgments, or values someone has on a person’s work, actions or thoughts. It can be a positive or negative opinion and is usually aimed at pointing out flaws.

There are two types of criticism and you can identify them by how they are delivered- Constructive criticism and destructive criticism.

Constructive criticism is a good type of criticism aimed at pointing out your flaws and showing you how to work on them. Receiving constructive criticism can help you improve better if you work on it.

Destructive criticism, on the other hand, is a type of criticism that has no aim of improving a person. It is done without carefulness or consideration of a person’s feelings. Although it may have some truth in it, it would be difficult to act on it because the criticism comes with so much anger and hurt.

The difference between these two types of criticism is in the delivery. When criticizing someone, do it with understanding. My mum would say, “Correct a person the way you’d love to be corrected”.

Knowing that criticisms can come with so many emotions, here are 7 tips on how to handle criticisms better.

7 Tips on How to Handle Criticisms Better

1. Control Your Emotions When Receiving Criticisms

You are much less likely to learn from your mistakes if you react angrily to every correction you receive. And trust me, you’d receive corrections every day.

The first tip on how to handle criticisms better, is by knowing how to control your emotions. It is natural to want to react when you are being criticized but this method does not prove effective. Instead, it stops you from learning.

The more emotional we are, the more defensive we become.

The best emotion to show is no emotion. When you know you are building a defensive wall around your actions, take a deep breath and pause. It is a simple but effective way to cool down that immediate reaction building up.

If you know you are not in the state of mind to respond appropriately, ask if the conversation can be had another time and give your reasons why politely.

2. Learn to Listen Attentively

Attentive listening involves paying attention to what is being said and giving your speaker nonverbal signs that you understand.

Receiving criticism can be very uncomfortable and our natural technique is to withdraw and act nonchalantly or even dismiss the correction.

Once I was cooking at home when my sister told me not to take a certain action until she told me to. I did not listen because, first, I am older than her and secondly, I had years of experience in cooking compared to her. Let’s just say, when I was done, I wished I had listened to her.

When you’re being criticized, learn to listen objectively. This means, paying attention to the corrections with an open mind without jumping to conclusions immediately. Listening to corrections gives you a view of your actions from another angle different from yours.

As Dale Carnegie said in his book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”-

“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.”

Dale Carnegie

3. Focus on the Suggestions and Not the Tone

And we have come to the hard part of criticism – the delivery.

See, I need you to understand this – people are very different. How I would take or interpret your words or actions will be different from how another person would. Again, how your parents will correct you will be different from how your boss in the office would.

Do not think or expect everyone would criticize with a friendly tone.

Some people may have valuable suggestions that can help you improve but their tone and manner of approach may affect how you receive them. In situations like this, pay attention to the message, not the messenger.

Subsequently, you can approach the person and appreciate their feedback while politely letting them know how you felt about their manner of approach.

4. Avoid Taking Criticisms Personal

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but people hate to be corrected and when you correct them, they tend to take it as an attack.

As much as you hate being criticized, you also dish out criticism to others. Shocked?

Alright, check this. Has someone done something or said something and you felt it was wrong and you pointed it out to the person?

How you view criticisms will determine how you handle criticisms better. When you understand that constructive criticisms are meant to point out our mistakes, you’d learn to appreciate them more.

5. Always Ask Questions From the Feedback

A good way of checking how helpful a criticism will be is by asking questions from whoever is giving out the feedback.

Not all criticisms are valuable. Some are given out of a place of anger and hate. These are destructive criticism and they usually have no solutions on how you can work better on them.

A good way to work on criticisms is by asking questions on how best to work on the flaws being identified. Especially when the corrections are coming from people you trust and have a good relationship with.

I was to work on a group project with a few course mates and we planned on working on a presentation. During practice, I was always interjecting my mates and interrupting their speech. A close friend of mine within the group called me aside and told me the negative effect of my actions and gave me tips to work on them.

Subsequently, I had to learn how to let them speak without interrupting them with corrections. Only after their full speech did the group point out where they needed to work on and improve. The presentation was a success!

The purpose of criticism should be so you can improve.

6. Receive Criticism With Humility

One good way of how to handle criticism better is by being open to corrections irrespective of your age, status, or position.

Did I just shake a table?

It is easier to receive criticism from people above us but what happens when the suggestions are coming from those, we consider junior.

You see, the Nigerian “do you know who I am” attitude has blocked us from being open to correction. And, you don’t need to be on the third mainland bridge to exhibit it.

Every time you belittle suggestions from people you feel are inferior to you in age, status, position, or class, you are saying “do you know who I am. Why should I listen to you?” Just as how I refused to listen to my sister when I was cooking.

Be open to corrections from everyone. We do not always know it all.

7. Resist the Urge to Criticize Back

Coined from the popular saying “resist the urge to shalaye”, resisting the urge to criticize back is a better way to handle criticisms.

When you are being corrected and you realize that the flaw isn’t from you but the person criticizing, it is always best to avoid criticizing back, immediately. That would only add fuel to the burning fiery emotions.

Instead, nod in the affirmation that the criticism has been well received and give your feedback later when emotions are not misfiring.

Also, when receiving criticism, that is not a time to also remember the flaws of the person. Responding to criticism with another criticism has proven to be a very bad move.

In this article, I have shared 7 tips on how to handle criticisms better. The real effect is not just in reading but putting these tips to practice.

Criticisms are part of our daily interactions. We can be better at handling them by keeping an open mind, controlling our emotions, and paying attention to suggestions.

What tip do you wish to work on? Let me know by dropping a comment in the comment section. Personally, my favorite part has to be tip 6.

What are criticisms?

Criticisms are opinions or judgments we have of the actions, behaviors, or thoughts of others.

Is criticism bad?

There is nothing wrong with receiving criticisms. They help us know our flaws and prove that we can work to be better every day.

How to respond to criticisms?

The best ways to respond to criticisms are by remaining calm, paying attention to what is being said, and asking questions on how to improve.

What are the types of criticisms?

There are two types of criticisms. Constructive criticism is given with the aim of correction and improvement while destructive criticism is done without regard for a person’s feelings.

How do I criticize someone?

When criticizing, understand that the person has feelings too. Give corrections just as how you would love to be corrected. This involves appreciating a person’s effort, giving out the corrections, and ending with an appreciation again.

What to Wear on a First Date

What to Wear on a First Date

Choosing what to wear on a first date can be nerve-racking, especially as you want to make a good first impression. A good first impression matters on your first date and your appearance is the first thing your date would notice about you. So yes, picking what to wear on a first date is as important as the date itself. Your appearance also contributes to how far your date would go. If your appearance gives a turn-off vibe, you would have blown your chances without even trying.

I once saw a tweet where a guy quickly ended a date because her makeup was so much, he couldn’t tell if it was painted.

However, picking a first date outfit depends on various factors, some of which include the location and time of your date.

Location as a Factor

The location of your date plays a major role in choosing your outfit. Depending on whether it’s a casual date or a dinner date, dressing to fit the setting of your date creates a good impression of you.

If you are going for a casual date, a casual outfit would fit the occasion perfectly. For example, a date at a beach bar would have you wearing casual clothing like beach shorts and shirts or skirts for the ladies.

For casual dates, you could always go out in jeans and a pair of sneakers. A blouse for the ladies and a shirt for the men would make such perfect clothing.

For your shoes, it’s best to keep them comfortable and simple. In case there would be an after-date romantic walk, wearing a pair of comfy shoes would be advisable.

On the other hand, if your date is in a fancy eatery at a luxurious location, you might want to add a bit of effort into looking stunning. For my men, if you need to appear in a suit, please do. It gives off an attractive masculine aura.

For the ladies, nothing works magic like a dinner gown for a dinner date. I believe I speak for all men out there, when I say coming to a dinner date in a fitted dinner gown does wonder to our brain.

For my lovers of culture, it’s perfectly okay to wear trads for a dinner outing, especially if it’s to an art gallery. A lovely kaftan for the men and abayas for the ladies would make your date feel like you’ve planned out your love life.

Tips for Choosing What to Wear on a First Date

Whenever you’re picking what to wear on a first date, you can use these tips to guide you on what to choose.

1. Wear Whatever Makes You Feel Comfortable

When it comes to choosing what to wear on a first date, it is advisable to pick whatever clothing you feel comfortable in.

There is a type of confidence you feel when you wear what you’re comfortable in. Knowing that you look good and stunning in your wear can give you more confidence when going for a date and having confidence in yourself matters on a first date.

Comfort is vital when choosing your outfit. You do not want to be pulling your skirt every five minutes or unbuttoning your shirt every second in front of your date. That question “are you sure you’re comfortable?” can be a dating turn-off.

Avoid choosing outfits you don’t feel comfortable in. This is why you have to consider the location and time when choosing your outfit so you don’t wear casual clothing to a dinner date at a fancy location and begin to feel out of place.

If there’s going to be a walk after the date, you know to get comfy when going. If you’re going to eat, you know to avoid clothing that is tight at the stomach level.

2. Make Comfortable Colour Choices

As well as choosing an outfit that makes you feel comfortable, you would also want to be mindful of the color.

If you ask me for color advice, when picking the first date outfit (or any outfit at all), I’d pick black today, tomorrow, and forever. You can never go wrong with black.

The popular color for most date outfits is either black or red. According to psychologists, men feel drawn to women wearing red and are willing to spend more when a woman wears red. My brothers out there, I have given you a lifehack.

If you’re in doubt about what color to pick, you could always choose black. Although black is considered a safe color, it is still a go-to fashionable pick.

But then, if everyone turns up on a date in red or black, wouldn’t that be too conventional?

You should pick whatever color suits you. The goal is to not keep worrying about how you look when sitting next to your date.

Honestly, for me, just pick black. For men, this article can guide you in choosing your wears colour for your first date.

3. Avoid Extreme Looks

Making a good first impression on your first date matters. The idea your date would have of you would start from your appearance.

When picking your first date outfits, keep them simple and classic. Outfits with shouting colors can be distracting during a date as it draws too much attention.

For the ladies, your makeup should blend naturally with your skin. Avoid overdoing it because one major turns off during a date is heavy makeup.

For the men, keep it simple. Whatever outfit you are choosing, make sure it speaks of your class.

Clothing Ideas for First Dates

Still at loss at what to wear on a first date, here are some ideas that you can recreate.

1. Jeans and a T-Shirt/Top

This wear is perfect for a casual daytime date. I find comfort in wearing jeans. You can always do a mix-up with your colors.

I preferably would go out in black jeans, a black t-shirt with anime merch (preferably Zenitsu), and a pair of sneakers (an all-stars or a schoolboy Vans would be so nice). Now, I feel like going on a date.

2. Flay Gown and Sneakers/Chinos and a Shirt

A casual evening date would require a bit more effort. Since most evenings have cool settings, wearing light clothing is preferable.

Flay gowns with a pair of your favorite sneakers for the ladies and a pair of chinos with a shirt would be appropriate.

3. Native Attires

In the north, we love our attires so much, it can never go wrong on a date. A simple kaftan for the men and an abaya for the ladies would set the tone for a perfect evening.

4. Dinner Gown/Corporate Dress

Stunning dates take effort. If your dinner date is at a fancy location, a dinner gown with heels and a corporate dress with brogues would make everyone stare.

We all want our first dates to be memorable. At least, I do. Having no clue what to wear on a first date can give you sweaty palms. Using the tips above, you can now choose without having to go through the selection stress. Remember to keep it simple and comfy.

What’s your preferred date location? For me, I love casual evening dates with a beach-like setting or a date at an art exhibition center.  Let me know yours in the comment section.

What should you not wear on a first date?

For a first date, avoid wearing revealing clothing, rumpled clothes or uncomfortable shoes. Remember, the goal is to look good and comfortable.

What guys want a girl to wear on a first date?

Guys love to see girls in gowns, fitted or flay. An extra topping is jeans on a t-shirt with a comfy sneaker to match.

How should I dress for a casual first date?

For the ladies, a pretty top and jean would fit perfectly while for the men, a jean and a shirt with cool sneakers would be appropriate.

Is it oK to wear jeans on a first date?

Oh yes, it is perfectly OK to wear jeans on a first date, especially if it is a casual date.
