Tupac Shakur vs. The Notorious B.I.G. Nas vs. Jay-Z. 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule and The Game. Drake vs Meek Mill. These are some of the greatest hip-hop feuds in history. Now, we have one in northern Nigeria.
DJ AB vs. G Fresh.
Who? You probably think DJ AB and Teeswag or Classique and Morell. But yep, DJ AB and G Fresh Alameen it is.
While DJ AB is very well known and has been rapping for the past ten years, the same can’t be said for G Fresh. Quite alright, he’s had a few hits, including Rayuwa ft Umar M Shareef, Halimatus Sadiya ft Ali Jita, Mayan Mata, Siyasar Kano and his Magnus opus, Kano to California ft Lil Ameer (which he claims former Governor of Kano, Rabi’u Knwankwaso used for his campaign).
Yet this wasn’t what brought him more fame; his feud with DJ AB did.
It’s not much of a feud if you look at it, as it’s just G Fresh Alameen taking digs at the latter. G fresh, popular on TikTok with almost 50k followers, regularly uses his popularity to taunt “Yaro na Kaduna,” as he calls DJ AB.
Of course, there’s nothing that people like more than drama. Naturally, this made him more famous.
Compared to his most popular post on the platform, featuring Kannywood actress Saratu Daso at his mother’s condolences visit on 20th July, which has over 121.8k views, and another one dissing a week later, which had 240k views and almost triple the likes, one would conclude there’s a significant increase.
In all this ‘feud,’ DJ AB has neither responded nor provided a single comment, leaving G Fresh alone with his rantings. On the contrary, AB’s bosom friend, Deezell, reached out to the former for a reconciliation.
In a video by Deezell, DJ AB was seen walking away from the trio’s truce meeting brokered by DJ AB. As fans of AB concluded, the rapper merely tolerates G Fresh because of his friendship with Deezell.
While fans of both have been seeking a collaboration, it’s unlikely that’ll ever happen. Because when it does, the duo will throw shades at each other, something the eager fans look forward to seeing.
Prom. The beautiful event signifies graduation from High school or secondary school as we call it. If you’re familiar with American movies, you must have seen quite a several proms. The dates, the dance, the prom king and queen, the kiss, and the usual stuff you see in American movies.
What if I tell you, you can now see them in northern Nigeria?
Nowadays, schools in northern Nigeria also do proms. The dates, dances, prom kings, and queens. Everything else, minus the kissing (probably). From Kano to Katsina to Kaduna to Jos. And don’t even get started on Abuja, where the elitist schools are located.
For instance, Kaduna, where schools like Zamani college, Essence, Queen’s Field schools, Danbo International School, and NTIC have been having proms since the early 2010s.
The gate fee is usually between 5k to 10, and only corporate attire is allowed.
In Katsina, the situation is not so different. While the practice only started recently in schools like Little Angels and Gobarau Academy, it isn’t any less fancy as DJs and MCs are hired.
The situation is the same for schools in Kano, like Lebanon school, Yandutse college, and Crescent Kano Capital school.
In Abuja, that has been the norm. for ages, The President’s granddaughter made headlines when she was seen at her prom dancing and jubilating with her hair open. Critics had a field day.
Like one social media user, Mahmood Salisu, said, “Prom dabi’ar yahudawa ne”, many people don’t agree with it.
Another popular analyst on Twitter, Galadiman Arewa, quipped ‘Arewa is lost’ “The confirmation is what secondary school kids are doing in the name of prom nights, graduation dinners, and parties. Ba banbanci da abunda arna sukeyi a US. It’s so sad,” he added.
The sentiment is mostly the same throughout northern Nigeria.
The most shocking thing is that Prom had been going on since the early 2010s but is only now receiving attention because of social media and the crazy TikTok culture.
Labarina season 5 aired on 2nd September 2022. The series has been well received by viewers and critics alike, with the acting of the lead actress Nafisa Abdullahi particularly praised.
Labarina is a Kannywood series centered around a girl named Sumayya, played by Nafisa Abdullahi, who fell in love with Mahmud, a guy who helped her out in her time of need. Gratitude gradually turned to love.
Her father was never in the picture, and her mother’s dream has always been for her to get a degree. With admission into the university, she met Presido, a Minister’s son who fell head over heels for her. Her heart was sole with Mahmud, so she didn’t even glance at him.
But Presido, like all spoiled kids, couldn’t take no for an answer and be willing to go to any length to get her, even going as far as beating up Mahmud.
Then came Lukman, who also likes her and even assisted in getting them a house, whom she didn’t give a chance.
Mahmud then met Laila. He has always dreamed of being a musician but couldn’t afford to have his vocal cords surgically altered. Laila won him over with a promise to pay for his surgery as she was a millionaire’s daughter and could afford it. She even bought him a car to prove her affections.
Mahmud dumped Sumayyah for riches and promises of fame, but Sumayya still clung to the hope that he would change his mind. When the talk of his marriage with Laila became serious and investigations were made, it was discovered that he was born out of wedlock.
Laila’s father refuses to accept the union.
With no one to blame but himself, as he had lost both Laila and even Sumayyah, he fell into depression and started drinking and mingling with the wrong crowd. Sumayya, on the other hand, was discovered by Sarkin waka by chance, who could see she was talented, and he helped make her a star.
After her rise to success, she made it her mission to find Mahmud because he left home and hasn’t been heard from since then. She eventually found him and did her best to rehabilitate him. He eventually died after learning she no longer loved him. After learning this, Sumayya kidnaps herself, while Presido and Lukman look for her and eventually find her. Her face was badly damaged because of the burns she received during the rescue.
This tiny detail coincided with Nafisa Abdullahi’s disagreement with the show’s producer, which eventually resulted in her leaving the show. She has since been replaced by Fati Washa, another capable A-list actress. She filled in the big shoes well from the reviews after the trailer.
Season 5 of Labarina also promises to let us see who finally wins over Sumayya, between Presido (who still seemed adamant about winning her over and even threatened to murder her father) and Lukman.
Will Sumayya’s mother finally let her meet her father?
What extreme length will Presido go to win Sumayya’s affections?
And what character is Saratu Daso playing?
We hope to see these important questions answered in the exciting new season. Labarina season 5 will likely be filled with drama and will certainly not disappoint when it continues releasing every Friday by 9:00 pm on Arewa 24. You can also check out Alaqa review, another exciting Hausa series.
