Fashion is always a controversial topic. People either love or hate fashion. Whether you love or hate fashion, you can agree that it can often be controversial. From clothing with messages to how designers and celebrities dress, fashion can be a source of how people express themselves. This list will discuss the most controversial fashion pieces in Northern Nigeria.
Some of these pieces were designed with a meaning, some were controversial, and some were designed to make a statement. Whatever the case, the most controversial fashion accessories in northern Nigeria are below.
1. Leg Chain
Also called anklets, anklets are one of the most controversial fashion accessories in Arewa. People believe that women who wear anklets are either into the same sex, in an open relationship, or irresponsible and wayward. These are mainly without any basis.
2. Nose Rings
These pieces of innocent-looking rings are just like the earrings, but they are for the nose. Many people, mostly elders and parents, frown on ladies wearing this without any basis.
3. Waist Beads
A few people believe waist beads are fetish and have spiritual powers; the popular word is “Kayan Mata”. Some people consider Kayan Mata items with spiritual powers to bend one to act against their will.
There have been testimonies on Instagram about the originality of the items and how they work. The internet, especially social media, took up to this; since then, there have been many opinions, stories, and beliefs about the misconceptions of waist beads in northern Nigeria.
Though they are all stories from different people, regardless of that, these beads are still loved by some.
4. Chantily
These new sets of materials are in vogue right now. The smaller ones are sold for N1500 – N3000 while medium ones are between N4000 – N10000. The higher quality ones are above 10k. The transparent material now used as a veil is highly controversial, as ladies’ wearing of transparent materials is frowned upon in Islam.
Hvjvvr on Twitter believes married women have no business wearing the Chantily veil. Many people quickly pointed out that married and unmarried women’s ruling remains the same. “Well, at some point she is right for a married woman not to wear that Chantilly. Looking good for your husband at home yes, is allowed but going out with that no no no that’s not allowed as a married woman.” MusaHafid responded.
