Momee Gombe is well-loved by many. The heartthrob who appeared in Hamisu Breakers hit song, Jarumar Mata. Elegant, beautiful, what’s there not to like? To some ‘haters’, however, she is despised.
At least, that’s what her followers termed him.
In a Tiktok video since deleted by one Sadeeq DTM, he showed a young girl who he claims to be the daughter of the actress. The girl, who isn’t more than 12 years answered in the affirmative when asked if she was the daughter of the renowned actress. According to the Tikttoker, she had abandoned her in the care of he grandmother while she was off to kano chasing riches.
But in a swift reaction, one of Kannywood’s renowned directors, Aminu S Bono, came to her defense. “What if she gave birth to the child? he asked. Other actresses like Aisha Najamu had also defended Momee Gombe, with the actress quipping, ” Wallahi karya ma yake dan ubansa. “
But it didn’t stop there.
A video of the actress’s alleged former husband, Adamu Fasaha, surfaced with him denying knowledge of the child. According to the person speaking on behalf of the musician, “he doesn’t have a child with Momee Gombe.”
Whatever the truth, the public got to know important facts, like the actress whose original name was Maimuna Abubakar had been married. Twice. While the controversy raged about whether or not she has a child, the actress remained unbothered.
The music, dances, and performances. All in a bid to mask away the pain. This best describes the situation of Safeeya Yusuf, now turned Safa.
But what does one expect anyways? She has had her nude video leaked, was fired from her job, and couldn’t go out for three months at one point. That’s right, three months. The actress revealed so in a recent BBC Hausa interview where she also mentioned that she almost deactivated her social media accounts.
According to her, If not for her mother, she wouldn’t have made it. But the artist probably exaggerates her words when she says she’s past that phase.
She’s not.
In a post she shared on Tik Tik on 7th September 2022, the Kwalelenka singer can be seen driving with a gloomy face. The caption of the video #depressedsouls speaks volumes.
This perhaps confirmed what many were insinuating in another video she shared on 12th August with the caption *sighs*.
She has since restricted her comments. The fact that she rarely posts on social media, unlike before, and is overly private means she’s taking a much-needed break off social media to detox. This also probably influenced her dress style.
These measures, including having an emotional support dog, might be effective only for a short time. The fact that she’s openly coming out to voice her troubles, unlike before, however, means the singer has matured emotionally.
And while that singing, and conquering and her quest to becoming the next ‘Davido’? might keep her occupied for now, but it won’t fill that void that made her join the singing industry in the first place.
Naziru Ahmad, more commonly known as ‘Naziru Sarkin waka’ or simply ‘Sarkin Waka’ is known in the North for his songs. He is a songwriter who also sings for the Kannywood industry; he also sings a lot of political songs.
He constantly flashes his riches on Instagram.
Naziru has a lot of peculiarities and unique habits and things. One of those is his unique cap style.
The singer wears mostly colorful and expensive Tangaran caps.
Another thing that is peculiar to him is the angle at which he tilts his caps. He folds just the top right side of his cap instead of a whole side and tilts it slightly to the left. The singer has popularized this style, and it has now been turned into a trendy one.
As a celebrity, it’s only natural that many of his male fans try to copy and emulate the way he wears his cap. And copy they did.
While he uses this for caps, the singer now appears to prefer turbans since early 2021 and has been going on since. How long he intends to keep wearing them is a debate for another day.
What does Ali Nuhu, Adam Zango, Abubakar Bashir Maishadda, Aminu Saira, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Feige (President of Marvel), and Bob Iger (CEO of Walt Disney) have in common?
Power.
Like their counterparts in Hollywood, the former group wields enormous powers in the Kannywood industry. And use it wisely they did.
Take, for instance, Ali Nuhu. The man, the legend. He has appeared in over 500 movies and still counting. He is a Director, Producer, and Scriptwriter and owns his studio. Yet, these are not his biggest strengths.
Ali Nuhu’s strongest flex is the influence he wields in the industry. He has many actors he mentors who remain loyal to him. The Ali Nuhu boys (and girls), if you will. They are not pushovers, too, as they include some of the biggest names in the industry.
From Maryam Yahaya, his supposed ‘Daughter’, to Maryam Booth and her brother Amude, Shamsu Dan Iya, to Umar M Shareef, Rayya 90 days, the retired actress Hafsat Idris, and many more, Ali Nuhu’s influence stretches wide across Kannywood including among other crew members making his influence unparalleled.
The only other person who perhaps comes close is Adam Zango, whose coterie of ‘Godsons’ includes; Ummi Rahab (who he has now fallen out with), Pretty, Mustafa Naburaska, and to some extent Falalu Dorayi. His influence is gradually slipping since his self-exile from Kannywood.
For other influencers like Aminu Saira, he has people like Nazifi Asnanic, Nazir Sarkin Waka, Yakubu M Kumo, and many more under his belt. His hit series Labarina had succeeded in making so many stars and being the talk of the town.
While producer Abubakar Bashir Maishadda mostly works with Ali Nuhu, he has his fair share of actors he made, including Momee Gombe, Aisha Humaira, Hassana Muhammad, Bilkisu Shema, and many more.
The ‘King of the Box office’ had made more Kannywod stars from 2018-date than any other person.
Judging by the number of blockbusters they are responsible for, the stars they’ve molded, and the influence they wield, perhaps these people deserved to be called the Godfathers of Kannywood.
NYSC is a nationwide exercise that is designed with the thought of one Nigeria in mind. Graduates from all over the country are sent to other states, not their states of origin or residence. This is meant for them to experience different cultures within the country.
Northerners are usually sent to the South and vice versa. Hence, Northerners experience cultural shock when they go to the NYSC camp.
Like one guy shared, ‘A guy dropping off his towel in the middle of the room to rub lotion’ was the worst for him. Another describes ‘full grown men taking their bath outside naked beside each other’ as a shock he won’t get over anytime soon.
To many, the parades and the lack of after-Fajr sleep is new. This prompts many to leave the camp early, as one male shared. “I go parade ground, and they say we should stand for 3 hours. I packed my bag and went home”, he shared.
From the few answers gathered, most of the cultural shock northerners experience is the lack of modesty in dressing, language barrier, and emphasis on bathing naked outside. The tradition of people bathing in the same bathroom is also common, another shock to most northerners leaving the North for the first time.
Perhaps many others will share their shocking experiences in NYSC camps.
